Edward Maclean is an upright and electric bassist, musical director, composer, producer — and the founder of Groove & Guidance, his distinctive approach to teaching rhythm, musicality, and artistic identity. Alongside his artistic work, he also works as a teacher, sharing his experience with the next generation of students.
Through Groove & Guidance, he works with musicians on developing deeper groove awareness, personal expression, and clarity in their musical voice — bridging performance, mindset, and creative direction.
He showcases his talent for intriguing melodies, open spaces, and carefully crafted beats best with his debut album Edward Maclean’s Adoqué and the follow-up Me&You. His latest work includes composing and producing music for Schwarze Adler, a documentary about Black soccer players in the German national team.
He tours mostly with Söhne Mannheims and Söhne Mannheims Jazz Department, the latter featuring his skills as producer, arranger, musical director, and bassist.
He broadened his artistic approach through collaborations with Vinterkint, Fischer & Kleber, Robin Rhode, Fetsum, and Eska Mtungwazi.
Being a much sought-after accompanist, he has toured with Peter Fox, Chima, Sarah Connor, Femme Schmidt, Jessica Gall, Jaguar Wright, Bahamadia, Ron Spielman Trio feat. Ron Spielman & Benny Greb, Colin Town’s Blue Touch Paper, and many more.
As musical director for liveDEMO, Berlin’s #1 HipHop and R&B party, he performed with artists such as Talib Kweli, Estelle, Patrice, Aloe Blacc, Ayo, Nneka, Jan Delay, Dendemann, Denyo, The Sugar Hill Gang, Da Bush Babees, Ty, Ms Dynamite, Guru and more.
His recording credits include Peter Fox’s multi-platinum live DVD Peter Fox featuring Cold Steel – live aus Berlin, the award-winning movie soundtrack Leroy, and Chima’s Von Steinen und Elefanten.
In 2015/2016, he appeared on German TV with HipHop legend Dendemann and his band Die Freie Radikale, providing the music for Neo Magazin Royale.
On his label r3w records, he releases his own work as well as music by friends and collaborators.
